A T T R A C T I O N S
| Within the diversity of the Mountain Rivers Region there is
something for all the family. Compare the three townships and enjoy the moods of each. Erica - gateway to the Mountain Rivers Region, was once a centre for a thriving saw-milling industry and farming community. It is the home of the 'King of the Mountain Axe-mans Carnival', which has been held annually in the town for over sixty years. Hear the axes ring through the mountains the next Australia Day weekend. In winter enjoy views of snow covered mountains from the peaceful township. Browse in the shops, or sit by the fireside in one of the cosy restaurants. In warmer weather, carriage rides or a relaxing stroll around the town are popular. A carnival evening pub session caps off an enjoyable days activity. Erica is frequently a meeting place for those wishing to explore areas further out, past Aberfeldy and beyond into the High Country, such as old gold mining ghost towns, or four wheel drive trips to Mt Useful. Rawson surrounded by uniquely rugged landscapes proves a popular stopover for the out door sport enthusiast and young active families. Built as an accommodation centre while the Thomson Dam was being constructed, Rawson boasts such facilities as an indoor heated pool, squash courts, flood lit tennis courts, mini golf, trail rides and riding lessons are also available.
There are many spectacular man-made and natural attractions in the area. Ride the historic heritage train, walk the old railway lines. Peruse old museums, visit old grave sites and linger in the beautiful gardens of the area. Picnic at Thomson Dam, the largest in the southern Hemisphere, or enjoy the panoramic views of Latrobe Valley from Peterson's Lookout. Ski cross-country from Mt. St Gwinear to Baw-Baw Village and back, it's all in a days outing. For the more adventurous try a week long horse ride from Beardmores to Aberfeldy or a weekend white-water rafting on the Thomson River. Visit Mt Erica and marvel at the rare Myrtle Beach trees along 'Beach Gully Walk', or follow the Alpine walking track past Mushroom Rocks to the summit. Go camping, gold panning or trout fishing near Cooper Creek or Tyers Junction or simply sit by the river and soak up the idyllic beauty of these mountain streams. Preserve your understanding of our Australian Heritage by living it - Back in time. There is so much to do - or so little to do in this Mountain Rivers Region. |
