Orbost is situated on the beautiful Snowy River valley, four hours east of Melbourne. The green and fertile valley boasts the mildest climate in Victoria. This timber town offers spectacular scenery and rich agricultural land.

Orbost is the gateway to seven national parks and is just ten minutes drive from the golden sands of the Ninety Mile Beach. The historical Slab Hut Tourist Information Centre with its unique atmosphere and friendly staff can help you plan your stay in the Orbost area. This is a genuine pioneer's hut, built in 1872 and is open seven days a week.

The Slab Hut also displays many historical photographs of Orbost identities and landmarks, and sells local craft. Forest park, near the slub hut, provides parking for cars and buses. There are picnic and barbecue facilities, disabled toilets and a well equipped playground. All within walking distance of the Snowy River.

As springtime arrives, wildflowers explode in a rainbow of colour from the coastal fringes to the highland peaks. Many species of orchid can be seen on the lowlands. Our own state emblem, the Epharis Impressa or Common Heath, flowers profusely from May to November. The East Gippsland Waratah makes its appearance from November through to January. If your time is limited, short drives to local attractions are plentiful. The Bemm River Road, east of Orbost has one of the most brilliant displays of wildflowers when in season. The wetlands between Orbost and Marlo abound with birdlife including Black Swans and Water Fowl.

A short drive around Orbost's loop road will provide visitors with views across the valley. Explore the remnants of a flood plain rainforest by driving to Lochend, on the south side of the river.

Take the Yalmy Road through the tall forests and farmlands to the southern section of the Snowy River National Park. From the picnic and camping area off Moresford Road, a short walking track leads to a spectacular view of Raymond Falls
