The 'Gippsland Plains Country Road' takes you through the rich dairy district of Central Gippsland. In the early part of the century most of the area was used for cattle grazing. Now the black and white dairy herds dominate the landscape. The waters of the Macalister, Avon, and Thomson rivers run through the district. Much of the farmland is irrigated by Lake Glenmaggie and the Cowwarr Weir. The small towns found on the plains are rich in history, many established in the 1800's as stop off points to the large goldfields of Walhalla and Crooked River and to the many smaller settlements dotted about the mountains. Each town along the way is unique and has many interesting places to
visit.
